Yes, it’s the theater district, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know barbecue. In fact, Virgil’s is about as close as you’ll get to authentic barbecue near Broadway. Locals, and especially tourists, hit this joint to enjoy starters like trainwreck fries, which come covered with melted cheddar, smoked bacon, scallions, jalapeños and ranch dressing; buttermilk onion rings with blue cheese dip; biscuits and gravy; and pan-fried crab cakes. Entrées include massive platters of pulled Owensboro lamb, Carolina pork shoulder, Memphis pork ribs and Texas beef brisket; and sides of baked beans, potato salad and cornbread. Go for the rich peanut butter pie for dessert. The setting is faux-roadhouse and sometimes rowdy. There are dozens of beers and a moderate wine list. Given the location, don’t expect prices as low as you’d find at a real roadhouse down South.
