Wann Izakaya Restaurant Review: Wann Izakaya brings a unique Japanese bar/restaurant experience to Seattle. Designed so the after-work crowd can relax and unwind, the menu features inventive small plates meant to be shared and unusual cocktails. The Zen-inspired interior is sparsely decorated in shades of cream and black with peek-a-book views of a glass-enclosed Zen rock garden. Find a comfortable booth and let a friendly and knowledgeable servers bring you one surprising hit after another. Start with a refreshing cucumber mojito, then sample the fried eggplant with mushroom sauce; Japanese fried chicken (ginger-soy marinated chicken served with sweet-and-sour sauce); and the seafood kamameshi, a mélange of seafood, bamboo shoots and burdock, simmering in bonito broth in an iron pot right at the table. With so many hits, there are sometimes misses. In this case, they include a barely seasoned salad of duck and mizuna, and satsumaimo clafoutis, a mushy dish of sweet potato layered with custard cream. But there's nothing that some shochu won't make you forgive and forget.
