 Watermark Restaurant Restaurant Review: Watermark serves stylish Southern cuisine prepared to exacting standards. Conservative offerings are well matched with countrified sides, as in pan-seared flounder with Vidalia onion mashed potatoes and green beans, or hickory-grilled duck breast with sausage grits and collard greens. The restaurant’s extensive wine list is backed up by professional service and fine crystal. A good selection of new-world Chardonnays lines up against an equally robust contingent of white Burgundies, and glamour Italian reds and Bordeaux have major roles. A round-up of both half-bottle choices and large formats adds depth to the inventory. What the space lacks in warmth --- airy and stark with low lighting --- it more than makes up for with the view of the sweeping downtown skyline. In the warmer months, dine on the rooftop patio, where aromas from the herb garden perfume the air. For dessert, we like the seasonally available “fig Newton,” a Black Mission fig strudel with hazelnut nougatine and whipped mascarpone. But the signature dessert may be the Rocky Road terrine, taking its cue from the popular ice cream with a dark chocolate ganache threaded by house-made marshmallow, and a layer of crispy rice, milk chocolate and almonds on the bottom. Thus is the inner child soothed in the adult body. |
