Pricey sushi, teppanyaki tables and outdoor dining (even if the front porch is just off busy Orlando Avenue) create a contemporary hot-spot for Japanese cuisine. If you just want fresh fish, take a seat at the sushi bar, order a specialty martini (they have nine varieties) or saké, and nosh away. This is the place to go for Americanized sushi, like the Mr. Cool roll with tempura calamari, cucumber, asparagus and mayo, topped with eel, shrimp, eel sauce and almonds; and the Vietnamese roll with yellowfin tuna, mixed greens, asparagus, cucumber, shredded daikon and carrots, wrapped with rice paper, and topped with cream cheese, avocado, shrimp, Japanese mayo and eel sauce. (If you’re looking for simplicity, there is a sushi sampler with tuna, salmon, red snapper and shrimp.) If you prefer your food cooked, the expansive menu offers everything from salmon teriyaki to duck with soba noodles and mixed vegetables with tofu. A decent wine list with more than 30 selections by the glass includes something for everyone, from a sweet Riesling to Cabernets. Just across from Winter Park Village, the place gets very crowded on weekends, and the only reservations taken are for the teppanyaki tables.
