Despite an updated moniker --- this place was formerly called simply Weird Fish --- the casual Mission hangout remains essentially unchanged. Blessedly casual with friendly but no-frills service to match, the progressive little spot with room for 20 excels in two things: easygoing fish and seafood dishes (usually fried) and vegan fare (also often fried). The brainchild of the St. Francis Fountain and Boogaloos owners, the restaurant prides itself on being both hip and green --- ingredients are fresh, local and sustainable as often as possible, fish is mostly farm-raised tilapia. Nibbles range from punchy sides such as fried dill pickles and beer-battered green beans to innovative salads --- a fresh spinach plate is blended with dried cranberries, grapefruit, peppery walnuts and mint-balsamic vinaigrette. Hearty portions of fish ‘n’ chips (including sweet-salty yam fries along with potatoes) are wrapped in local newsprint. Alternatively, opt for vegan, soy-battered tempeh or tofu instead. Fish tacos, fried oysters and a daily “mystery dish” round out the lunch and dinner menu. Breakfast includes further “weird” and tasty scrambles. Organic beverages include ginger lemonade, iced tea, and a short list of local ales and wines.
