An aging Holiday Inn---a landmark cylindrical tower just off the 405---has been transformed into the stylish, hip Hotel Angeleno, and its penthouse restaurant, WEST, is a welcome dining option in this neighborhood by the Getty Center. A generous use of rich dark wood complements the light earth tones of sleek club chairs and cushy banquettes, most of which provide panoramic city views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The sophisticated space features a lounge on one side of a prominent white marble bar and leisurely dining on the other. At WEST, Italian cuisine balances, perhaps precariously, against elements of an American steakhouse, but it doesn’t feel particularly disjointed. Small antipasti include velvety burrata cheese with sweet peppers and roasted field mushroom crostini, while the crudo selection includes fluke with Meyer lemon, hot peppers and sea salt and tuna and salmon tartare. Large plates range from Dijon-crusted rack of lamb and grilled branzino to a selection of respectable steaks. Desserts include chocolate cake with a molten caramel center and peach tarte Tatin. The short wine list offers many intriguing options from around the world, and about a dozen selections are offered in eight- or 16-ounce quartinos. |
