With very few fine dining establishments in San Clemente, White Horses is a standout for its signature appetizers, salads and grill items. Located opposite San Clemente's scenic pier, the restaurant has a cozy yet modern setting with its lively outdoor patio and art-inspired interior. Locals have come here for decades to start with the filet fondue, butternut squash ravioli or a platter of Spanish cheese and charcuterie. The grill menu features a standard array of steaks, seafood and corn-fed chicken. You can ask for your selection grilled, sautéed in butter or baked, with a choice of sauces like red wine jus, hollandaise, white wine cream or Thai dipping sauce. For people who like to experiment, however, there's an internationally inspired concept menu that changes every six weeks or so, offering up everything from mocha-roasted venison, lamb khorma and guava scallops. At meal's end, order up several of the small, innovative desserts to share such as a chocolate, chili and cherry brûlée. Reasonable three-course "early bird" specials are offered daily starting at 4:30 p.m.
