Echo Park's Winsome is a sleek spot from Spare Room owners Marc Rose and Med Abrou. Jeremy Strubel (Rustic Canyon) creates sophisticated and beautifully styled contemporary American dishes such as roasted maitake mushrooms and sautéed greens --- foresty flavors are heightened by tarragon breadcrumbs and burnt lemon aïoli. Fennel-crusted branzino gets a fresh seasonal accompaniment of buttered ramps, fava beans and leaves, and crispy baby artichokes. Duck egg toast is made a bit more decadent with nduja and Reading raclette. Even aguas frescas are gourmet gems, especially the version with blood orange, beet and charred kumquat. Former République pastry chef Leslie Mialma does the baking, and the case of goodies at the front of the restaurant often showcases items like bruléed caramel rye brownies, blueberry spelt muffins, and sweet and savory brioche. A handsome Eastside crowd lingers in the airy dining room booths over macchiato. They are surrounded by blond wood and midcentury décor, while the sprawling patio is the perfect spot for al fresco breakfast.
