XXX Rootbeer Drive-In Restaurant Review: XXX is what might result if a 50’s malt shop collided with a classic used car lot. The last outpost of a national chain of root beer stands dating to the 1930s, it overflows with period photos and posters and vintage gas pumps; entering the restaurant is like becoming part a giant, noisy 3-D collage aglow at night. Slide into old red and white car seats at the booths, and you could be in a scene from Grease or The Last Picture Show. The food is just as authentic, with a menu offering a dozen different burgers, most named for classic cars. If you’re seriously hungry, order the Triple XXX---an enormous eight-inch burger piled high with three patties and three cheeses---definitely big enough to share. The special Thousand Island sauce is a must, although kids will want their burgers plain. Substitute crispy onion rings for XXX’s french fries and you'll be pleased. The rich, spicy root beer is custom bottled, and soda fountain drinks can be ordered with whipped cream and chocolate drizzles. No credit cards accepted or alcohol served. |
