Top-drawer barbecue in sleepy downtown Montrose. Ribs, Texas brisket and Carolina pulled pork are excellent.

Zeke's Smokehouse, Montrose, CA

Zeke's Smokehouse Restaurant Review

: Charming as it is, downtown Montrose has never been home to a hot dining scene, but Zeke’s (named after a dog) draws barbecue aficionados from all over the region. It's a homespun, casual eatery, and its ribs --- Kansas City baby-backs and Kansas City spare --- rank among the best in town. Every table is equipped with three barbecue sauces, including a mustard-based sauce well-suited to the slow-cooked Carolina pulled pork that is pure Southern comfort food. Sandwiches range from Southern fried catfish with rémoulade and Texas brisket to a veggie burger (for those who wandered into the wrong restaurant). The “Smokehouse chili” is worth sampling, too. Desserts include strawberry shortcake, fruit cobbler à la mode and bread pudding with bourbon sauce. There’s a small selection of California wines and a nice craft beer menu.
