This steadfast St. Louis favorite continues to please, especially with people on their way to various happenings at the Repertory and Opera Theatres of St. Louis. It’s relatively humble from the outside---save its coat of lavender paint---but once inside you’ll find reliable offerings that reside somewhere between standard and silly. A strong appetizer selection stars duck tacos (more like an open-face wonton) with mango salsa supported by cold mussels in a dill sauce. A large pair of chalkboards offers a half-dozen specials, plus mainstays like trout zinnia and sweetbreads. The dessert list is often led by a standout version of sticky toffee pudding. In season, fresh strawberries and toasted angel food cake are the don’t-miss choice. Festive Wednesday night specials like lobster (announced in advance with a window sign) draw patrons. The covered back porch, complete with ceiling fans, is a pleasant choice during nice weather. Reservations, especially on weekend nights and during the opera season, are an absolute must. The wine list is solid, with a good range of wine labels, vintages and prices. Service is crisp and efficient, but alert them if you have to worry about a curtain time.
