| Dog biscuits outside beckon canine owners to tie up their pets and step into the goofy allure of Zocalo. This lively, noisy neighborhood Mexican restaurant is run by Bobby and Laura Shapiro, who cannily invested in a bevy of popular Upper East Side dining spots in the '70s and '80s. Zocalo is more hands-on for the Shapiros, who have already spun off Zocalo Restaurant & Taqueria in Grand Central Terminal. We are smitten with the 50-plus tequilas, the lava stone-ground guacamole, chocolate-jalapeño sherbet and batch of good cervezas. The tiny kitchen also does a wonderful catfish preparation---dredged in bracing but not burning spices, sautéed and served with crispy jÃcama and red pepper slaw. |
