A tradition in downtown Ventura, Zoey’s has long been known as a live music venue and quaint eatery snuggled in the back of 1920s-era El Jardin courtyard. The current location on nearby Santa Clara Street provides more space, which is good for the music, but without the quiet courtyard charm the restaurant loses its main appeal. The menu is comprised mostly of sandwiches, salads and pizzas---internationally styled concoctions: from Greek to Thai, barbecue chicken to the “Islander,” with mango rather than pineapple. The service is awkward at best, but flaky thin-cut onion rings and sweet potato fries served with honey mustard and chipotle aïoli dipping sauces keep diners happy while they wait. The lavender-infused lemonade still provides a refreshing herbal splash, although it was clearly a better fit at the old location. To be sure, the restaurant lacks polish. Go for the music, and while you’re there have a bite to eat.
