New York's Tuthilltown Distillery produces Half Moon Orchard Gin with a nod to gin's historical beginnings while looking ahead and innovating the craft. Named for the Halve Maen ship that arrived in New York hailing from Amsterdam, the home of genever, in 1609, it also pays further respect through the inclusion of traditional botanicals such as elderberry, bergamot, coriander, cardamom, juniper, bitter orange, lemon peels, and almonds. The craft is evident in the care and ingenious ways by which this gin is executed. The bergamot is pickled so as to never go bad and keep a consistent flavor profile. The base spirit is a unique blend of 80 percent wheat and 20 percent apples. The aromas intoxicate the mind with layers of citrus, juniper and, yes, apple. This gin has the base palate of a London Dry Gin, mellowed with the addition of apple pie. It's a true craft gin.
