OCTOBER 2010 TASTES NEWSLETTER

Variety is the spice of life, and in that spirit we have compiled some ideas to help make October a great month for you. From top places to enjoy seafood to the best hotel cooking schools in the world, from the fastest cars on the market to the scariest movies of all time, you'll find plenty of inspiration for entering the fall season with aplomb.

GO FISH

We enjoy fresh seafood all year long, but we especially love it in October — a month ending with an "R" that has traditionally indicated a good time to eat shellfish. Check out our lists for the best seafood restaurants near you as well as the top 10 seafood restaurants in the U.S. Also dive into our choices for the best places to eat abalone and sea urchins. For serving seafood at home, learn which wines match up with fish, oysters and sushi.

OFF TO OZ

If you prefer your sea creatures alive and kicking, swim with the fishes at one of the top 10 diving resorts in the world, featuring eclectic locales from Bali to the West Indies. Or combine your love of travel with your love of cooking and book a trip to one of the top 10 hotel culinary schools worldwide. If you visit Thorn Park by the Vines in Australia's Clare Valley, check out our travel guide to the land Down Under. For other ideas, visit our South Australia photo gallery, and read our review of the remote Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island.

SUCH A LOVELY PLACE

Another travel destination we are eyeing this month is California, where we enjoyed a scenic location, gorgeous weather and an Ocean Prelude treatment at The Spa at Terranea on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A little farther down the coast, foodies can partake in the seventh annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival November 17-21, featuring the seaside city's best chefs and more than 800 wines from around the world. SUPER HIGHWAY

Among our favorite finds of the month is the Volvo S60, which boasts a new dynamic attitude that raises driver satisfaction and confidence. Read our car review to learn more. If you prefer things fast and furious, find a speedster that's just right for you on our list of the top 10 fastest cars.

TRICK OR TREAT?

Cooler nights call for hearty brews, and our bag of treats also features the top 10 fall beers. Toast the season with a mocha porter or pumpkin ale, perhaps while taking in one of the top 10 scary movies of all time. And speaking of scary (for budding chefs out to impress Gordon Ramsay, that is), be sure to watch our own Sophie Gayot in the 100th episode of "Hell's Kitchen" on October 13, on Fox at 9pm PST.

We have much more for you on our website and on our blog. From restaurant news to culinary events, interviews with chefs to behind-the-scenes videos, business travel guides to movie reviews to spa news, we cover everything you need to live long and prosper.

We also want to hear from you. Post a comment on our forum, or review a restaurant or hotel on our site for our millions of visitors to read.
