Having gained wide popularity in Korea in the 1950s, Lotus Leaf Tea is a product of the Honam Tea Estate. A company with much praise and many prizes to its name, Hankook Tea has blended a mix of green tea leaves to create a mild and gentle tasting variety of sencha.
Although the instructions recommend steeping it for 2 to 3 minutes, 5 minutes seems like the optimal time to allow the flavor to fully bloom. Upon first tasting it, one can detect the subtle flavors it shares with all other senchas. However, this tea stands out because it does not suffer from the same bitter after taste some loose leaf green teas sometimes leave. More subtle notes of the tea come out if one chooses to steep it longer, but still without the overwhelming bitterness. The more astringent notes can be detected after a couple more tastings, but they complement the mildness of the tea nicely. The contrast creates the complex flavor that sencha is known for without stepping too far from the natural way of harvesting and brewing it. Lotus Leaf Tea is a great tea for a mild afternoon sip.
