Tartans and Tea Sandwiches
by Sylvie Greil
Los
Angeles is primarily a latte-toting town, but the tradition
of tea is seeing a subtle revival. Case in point: t
on Fairfax. Designed as a contemporary interpretation
of the traditional British tea house, this new “urban
tea café” serves more than 100 organic
teas, from black to white to green, but it’s the
sandwiches that have us hooked.
Adding
a bit of panache to the traditional afternoon tea sandwiches,
the menu features fresh produce and hearty breads. Try the Manchego, arugula and fig on pain de mie (a
perfect twist on a traditional, no-crust white tea sandwich);
cheddar and homemade date chutney on organic whole grain;
and grilled Lapsang Portobello with goat cheese on ciabatta.
Sandwiches include a choice of freshly-made side salads
such as dandelion potato, kale in creamy peanut dressing
and scarlet quinoa with baked tofu. Pair them with one
of t’s numerous brews: Frost Oolong, steeped at
a specific temperature, allowing the tea leaves to unravel
slowly and release their woodsy notes; Royal Pu-erh,
aged for decades to create a complex and unique flavor;
or Ceylon Tips, a delicate, subtle white tea.
We
applaud the tartan-patterned barstool seat covers — a
playful ode to the Isles. The teahouse also boasts live
DJs on Friday and Saturday nights and “deconstructed”
tea on Sunday afternoons. Keep an eye out for more locations;
t on Fairfax is intended to be the first of three to
five locations in the Los Angeles area to be built over
the next three years. Unique décor and a fantastic
take on traditional British fare make this eatery much
more than just a place to get the perfect cup of tea.
