The Fabulous Dream of Columbus

Rosario Island
The heavenly Rosario Island

Our senses sated with art, architecture and culture, we head for the ideal beach in this Caribbean paradise with its turquoise waters, white sands, corals and palm trees. It's only an easy boat ride away. Speedboats depart in the morning from the harbor to various coastal destinations and islands. It takes one hour by speedboat to reach the Isla Grande in the Rosario Islands 25 miles southwest of Cartagena. Forty-five low coral islets densely covered by the mangrove interspersed by beaches comprise this small archipelago. Although there's not a drop of soft water, some Carthaginians have built villas here. They bring their water supply from Cartagena for their stay and generate their own power.

Rosario sharks
The lunch of the sharks supervised by an egret bird

The shallow and warm sea reveals an abundant marine life for divers and swimmers. Isla San Martin boasts a remarkable Marine Park where many species of local fish are visible in their natural habitat. An incredible show is featured by a dozen rare species of tamed sharks under the supervision of an egret bird that seems to coordinate their movements as they come to eat their food on board. There's time for snorkeling or diving in the crystal clear tepid water, to discover the corals haunted by multi-colored fish.

After lunch served in a hotel, a siesta in a hammock on the beach is a delicious option until the departure of the return boat to Cartagena.

One way or another, don't miss these moments. It is as close as it gets to life in paradise...except maybe for a few mosquitoes at dusk.
