LAS VEGAS TOUR: DAY 3

Located in the master-planned community of Summerlin, JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort is 15 to 20 minutes northwest of The Strip. The exquisite 545-room hotel offers guests a stylish resort setting with Mediterranean architecture and glorious views of the mountains. Have breakfast in the lovely Ceres or on its patio overlooking lush gardens, waterfalls and fountains, followed by 18 holes of world-class golfing, or indulge yourself in the resort's state-of-the art spa.

The resort's J.C. Wooloughan Irish Pub is always a lively place to wile away the afternoon or evening. For dinner, certified master chef Gustav Mauler's award-winning Italian eatery, Spiedini is revered by locals and visitors, as is his cozy Gourmet Tobaccos & Lounge.

Among other choices is a visit to Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts near Summerlin Parkway and Town Center Drive (702-365-7690) for a weekday lunch or dinner, or Station Casinos' Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa (702-797-7777), or Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (702-515-5350) ten miles away off West Charleston Blvd., a picturesque destination for hiking, picnicking and spotting wildlife such as bighorn sheep (702-515-5350).

For the adventuresome looking for a complete change of environment, get away from it all with a visit to Mount Charleston, 36 miles away, north on U.S. 95 and left onto State Route 156 up the mountain to where the temperature is 35 to 40 degrees lower than on the desert floor. Perched at 7,700 feet in the Toiyabe National Forest's Spring Mountain Recreation Area, Mount Charleston Lodge features hearty dining enhanced by a massive fireplace and picture windows with views of the mountain's towering pines. Camping, hiking, horseback riding, winter sleigh rides, snowboarding, skiing and sledding are among exhilarating activities (702-872-5408).

Enjoy your vacation in and around Las Vegas, allowing some time for the casinos' "games of chance," and plan to come back soon. You'll always find something new, adding to the attractions and adventures that have stood the test of time.
