DAY 2: Yosemite Valley, the Grand Tour and Badger Pass Ski Area

It’s now time to explore the majestic Yosemite Valley. Activities vary with the season, and you can choose from a number of ranger-led programs and walks to acquaint you with the area. We recommend starting out early on a park tour, where experienced guides explain the park’s geology, wildlife and history as you visit the main landmarks.

The Grand Tour and the two-hour Valley Tour are great excursions that will take you to many of the most scenic points of the park, including Valley View, Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridal Veil Falls and the famous "Tunnel View," one of the most photographed and picturesque backdrops.

If you are up for a hike, fuel up first and enjoy lunch in Yosemite Village at either Degnan's Deli, where you can feast on tasty sandwiches, or the Village Grill (open seasonally), which offers a variety of grilled sandwich and burger options.

Hiking in Yosemite is an enjoyable way to explore the park and with 800 miles of hiking paths, you’ll have plenty of choices at all levels. During late spring through early fall, a breathtaking option is to purchase a one-way ticket that takes the winding road to Glacier Point. Pause to admire the spectacular views of Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra peaks and domes from 3,200 feet up, and then hike down the four-mile trail back into the valley floor. There is also the 10-mile Pohono Trail for an all-day hike that is quiet and less-traveled, and has four breathtaking vistas: Dewey, Crocker, Stanford and Old Inspiration Points.

During winter, head to the Badger Pass Ski Area and hit the slopes

For those visiting in the winter months, the park offers a multitude of activities, like cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing at the Badger Pass Ski Area and Crane Flat . In the evenings you can experience the rare delight of ice skating on an outdoor rink right under the shadow of Half Dome at Curry Village, or head out on a full moon snowshoe walk at Badger Pass.

In the evening, dinner at the Mountain Room at Yosemite Lodge offers picture-perfect views of Yosemite Falls in its glass-walled room. Get there before sunset to enjoy the view over a meal of classic American dishes like steak, seafood and pasta. Indulge in an after-dinner drink at the Ahwahnee Bar.
