The Works of Jean-Michel Basquiat

"The Jean-Michel Basquiat Show," featuring 80 of his paintings and 40 of his drawings, is one of the largest retrospectives dedicated to this American artist. The exhibit documents the artist’s work and the context in which his art was formed: New York City during the ‘80s. The displayed pieces will focus on themes that were most important to Basquiat—including his African-American roots, his never-ending search for identity through self-portraiture, his friendship with Andy Warhol and the recurring use of words such as SAMO, which he used as his tag on downtown New York walls during his period as a graffiti artist. Photographs documenting his life and work, as well as a film that recounts his heritage and the influence on him by legendary figures of “black culture," will also be shown.

When: Through Jan. 28, 2007, Tuesday-Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-20:30 p.m.

Where: Triennale de Milano, Viale Alemagna, 6, 20121 – Milan.

Admission: €8 regular admission; €6 under 18 and those over 65.
