Pearl farming in Fiji

Baby oysters ready to go into the water

Located in the North, on the island of Vanua Levu, this pearl farm is the only one in Fiji.
Once a year, in August and September, Japanese experts come to Savusavu to extract the precious natural creations. Pearls come in all different sizes and shades of black, purple and gold.

In the middle of a small lagoon

Harvested ones need cleaning
They are set to be pre-opened

The pearl in its sack, just before it is extracted

The jewel is suddenly here, pulled out by Japanese experts

The nuclei, or irritants inserted into oysters to make them grow pearls
The fruits of a successful harvest

The friendly farmers

All ready for you
