Kapalua Adventures Review

The mountains of Maui may make a beautiful backdrop while you're lounging poolside at your hotel, sipping Mai Tais, but they can be so much more than that. To get the most out of the island's natural landscapes, get off your beach towel and head to Kapalua Adventures' Mountain Outpost and Adventure Center. A new offering from Kapalua Resort (home to The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and The Kapalua Villas), Kapalua Adventures provides visitors with outdoor experiences that are both exciting and eco-friendly.

Start off at the Kapalua Adventure Center — located in the central area of the resort — which includes an outfitters shop with gear for adventurists and a light-fare café that uses fresh and organic ingredients from the resort's own Kapalua Farms. From the Adventure Center, guests are transported to the Mountain Outpost by bio-diesel fueled Mercedes-Benz Unimogs, via existing pineapple roads.

High above the resort, the Mountain Outpost features one of the largest zipline systems in the U.S., with four dual-track ziplines. The ziplines allow visitors to view plant and bird life with minimal disruption to the ecosystem, and are a lot of fun to glide down on. Even those who are afraid of heights may fare better than expected. Very little exercise is actually required, but participants must be 10 years of age or older, and weigh no more than 250 pounds.

Zipline tours range from a three-hour "Lower Mountain Loop" excursion at $149 per person to a four-hour long, $299-per-person "Ultimate Zip Experience," with two miles of parallel cable lines spanning across native forests. If it's physical challenge that you're seeking, embark on either of the two Adventure Tours, where you can test your skills on a 40-foot-tall climbing tower or maneuver through a ropes challenge course.

A super-friendly staff is on-hand to guide you through the activities. As part of their training, each staff member completes a rigorous course, comparable to that employed by firefighters. In addition to safety, the staff is also well-versed in Hawaiian culture, customs and local wildlife, ensuring that your adventure will be as informative as it is exhilarating.
