Stralsund City Guide

Created by the Sea and for the Sea

Stralsund is a seaside city, created by the sea, for the sea. Between the Strela Sound and dammed lakes, its centre is surrounded by water leaving an impression of an island. All the historical monuments are accessible by foot. From the "Alter Markt" (Old Market), bordered by ancient houses, the view of the openwork gable of the Rathaus is impressive. Behind lies the imposing St. Michael church. Inspired by the French cathedrals, the Nikolaikirche is a masterpiece of Gothic brick art with the unusual touch of flying buttresses rarely used in these constructions. Stralsund was once the foyer of the Gothic brick architecture that spread in the entire region.

Stralsund distinguished itself in 2010 with the creation of the Ozeanum (Ocean Museum), which updates the concept of aquarium sheltered in a modern architectural structure. It shows marine life in an instructional and attractive way, driving home why it's so paramount to preserve it. Stralsund boasts about 3,000 small and medium businesses but relies mainly on a large shipyard.
