Photographing the sunrise

Whether you are an amateur or serious hobbyist, improve your photography skills by learning and practicing in one of the most photogenic places in the world. The Maui Photo Festival & Workshops, taking place this September, offers budding photographers a chance to learn from experienced pros while exploring the lush tropical Hawaiian landscape.

Each day of the four-day workshop begins with "golden-hour" excursions to shoot sunrises in some of the most spectacular settings, such as on top of a volcano or over the ocean. The middle of the day features classroom sessions ranging from basic training to darkroom skills. Those skills will be put to the test in the afternoon with demonstrations and optional excursions, such as underwater photography in Maui's reefs, aerial photography from a helicopter, and wedding and food photography from the industry's best commercial photographers.

When: Sept. 16-20

Where: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, 200 Nohea Kai Drive, Maui

Admission: $695 per person, optional excursions available for separate fee; lodging and airfare purchased separately
