TRAVEL GUIDE: IOWA

It may come as a surprise, but Des Moines has as captivating a skyline as any city. And novelists and composers have taken their share of inspiration from this state, from The Bridges of Madison County to The Music Man. Visit one of the six historic covered bridges in the area, or if you're lucky enough to be in town, take in the North Iowa Band Festival, whether or not it has 76 trombones.

DANES IN AMERICA
The Danish Windmill

This windmill was originally built in 1848 and shipped from Denmark to Elk Horn in 1976, just before Denmark passed a law preventing windmills from being transported out of the country. This community boasts the largest Danish population in the U.S. and hosts various festivals to celebrate their heritage.
