Since 1969, restaurant, hotel, travel & other witty reviews by a handpicked, worldwide team of discerning professionals—and your views, too.

A couple of hours (and a few dollars) are all you need to explore with a minimum effort this 150-million-year-old wonder and discover many of its beauties. It would take a lot of time and effort to tread the rugged terrain, descend the cliffs and access the summits of this geological marvel that is the Grand Canyon.

The helicopter does the hard part for you, getting you there in a few minutes over Lake Mead and the Grand Wash Cliffs, to discover these vast desert lands. Then, after a jump over a high plateau, surges the revelation of that very deep throat, carved into the mountain over the centuries by a blue snake meandering far below in the greenery of its banks, the Colorado River. You descend past towering rock formations.

From the chopper flying into the Canyon below its rims, the view is grandiose. Such a viewpoint permitting the observation of both sides is inconceivable if not by air. Of course, it is changing every second. You whish these moments of intense jubilation would last forever. But like on a gigantic screen, the gorgeous spectacle keeps unfolding before your eyes and disappears leaving place for another surprise. Emotions guaranteed!

On the way back, lost in the emptiness, can be seen abandoned silver mines and, in this Wild West, maybe some wild life, horses or longhorns. The sun sets the landscape on fire metaphorically: the brilliant rock formations of the aptly named Valley of Fire reflecting the sunrays seem to be set ablaze.

At the conclusion of this voyage into prehistoric times, we face a sharp contrast as the chopper starts on its last stretch over the strip with its razzle-dazzle. But isn't Las Vegas the most unexpected and predictable city in the world?
