InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort - Germany

A winding Alpine drive delivers visitors to the posh, earthy-modern InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort in Obersalzberg, Germany. Perched 1,000 meters above the sea on Eckerbichl in a pin-drop-quiet, posh, Bavarian Alps setting, it’s all about offering guests jaw-dropping, panoramic mountain views.

An equally appealing destination for outdoor enthusiasts and luxury-minded loungers, there’s no shortage of things to do or ways to leisurely pass the time. Immediately, one is drawn to the dramatic, open-hearth fireplace, which operates as the heart of the hotel. Soaring ceilings, looming, oversized lighting and minimalist furniture abound. Adjacent, a sleek-lined, cherry wood-paneled library on one side and cocktail lounge on the other are built for chilling out (and peering outside through floor- to-ceiling windows). The four-story space is replete with natural details—from gneiss rock touches to larchwood walls and dolomite verde-accented bathrooms with under-floor heating.

It's small enough to feel intimate and spacious enough to seem utterly private. The resort’s 138 rooms are well-appointed—expect nice toiletries, separate granite showers, and deep tubs, not to mention a complimentary stay-healthy mini bar stocked with waters, wellness drinks and Valrhona chocolate. Whether you’re in the spacious-enough double rooms or the palatial presidential suite with kitchen and conference space, plush linen-topped beds are positioned to take full advantage of the landscape. Some rooms sport fireplaces; all have excellent views.

Anyone looking to get active can take a Segway tour of the terrain, and there’s a helicopter pad on the grounds for those wishing to view the area from another perspective entirely. When it’s warm, a hike through the meadows is just what the doctor ordered, while winter ushers in opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing.

Not to be overlooked is the luxurious, exotic Mountain Spa, where an emphasis is placed on treatments that use indigenous ingredients, such as local salt. It’s also where you’ll find the heated indoor and outdoor pools, the latter being an absolute must—not to mention amazing juxtaposition—in snowy weather.

Dining is far from an oversight. The resort’s every day establishment, Restaurant 360°, overlooks snowcapped mountains, while serving a lavish buffet breakfast and elegantly presented dishes like a terrine of tomato jam-laced roasted eggplant and zucchini the remainder of the day. In turn, Bayernstube Schalander—outfitted with a tile stove and country-cool décor—is the perfect place to take in traditional German cuisine like roast pork with kraut and malt beer jus; cheese fondue; and mustard-slathered, fresh-baked pretzels. Its crowning glory, however, is Le Ceil, a circular, nouvelle dining establishment under the deft hand of Ulrich Heimann. There, foodies bask in the likes of local salmon trout plated with mashed, still-toothsome beans and artichokes.

Conference facilities accommodate up to 200, while offering the same stunning scenery, and Vinotéque, a private, wine-walled space caters to groups in search of small-scale tastings.

If you manage to venture beyond the grounds, check out the reflective, crystal-clear Lake Königssee, which is surrounded by steep peaks of the Watzmann mountains. Or, head to the city of Salzburg—home to Mozart’s boyhood home—which is just a short drive away. Along the way, you’ll see a landscape studded with fairy tale castles and postcard-worthy cathedrals.
