Who says you shouldn't mix business and pleasure? With its location at the heart of Orange County's business hub and in Newport Beach's busiest and most upscale business district, Island Hotel Newport Beach makes it easy to enjoy the best of both worlds.

One of the pluses of the hotel is its location adjacent to Fashion Island, an entertainment and shopping enclave that's particularly upscale (boasting Orange County's only Neiman Marcus) and very pedestrian friendly. Just a mile from the quintessential Southern California shoreline, the hotel overlooks the nearby islands of Balboa, Lido and Catalina. It commands fantastic views, which were visible from the step-out balcony of our small Executive Suite. The 295 guest rooms and suites play off the hotel's oceanfront locale, with bright, inviting colors and a light and airy atmosphere. Contemporary-yet-comfortable furnishings, a soothing neutral color palette, a custom mattress and a choice of down or non-allergenic pillows translates to a comfortable overall feel and a restful night. In-room entertainment is available through 42-inch Sony plasma screen HD televisions with movie channels and Bose DVD/CD audio systems.

Even the event spaces reflect the Island Hotel's surroundings. Meetings aren't stale and stuffy here, but brightened with lush tropical interior plants and walls painted in soft gold. More intimate meetings can be held in one of the ten meeting rooms — five with built-in screens, marker boards and outdoor terraces — and for large-scale events, there is a 6,600-square-foot ballroom.

For those in need of relief from the tedium of business meetings, the exhaustion of travel or simply a hard day of shopping, the hotel boasts a 4,000-square-foot spa. The spa even offers a 90-minute Travel Recovery treatment for jetsetting guests and a salon with manicure, pedicure and waxing services.

Oak Grill executive chef Marc Johnson brings his interpretation of contemporary cuisine to a sleek, completely redesigned dining space that was formerly the Palm Terrace restaurant. The adjacent Aqua Lounge is a bar concept featuring outdoor seating, craft cocktails, an extensive wine list and small bites.

With the Island Hotel's seemingly endless flow of business and community functions, its focus tends more towards the accessible and the sociable than the exclusive. Off-site recreation is easily within reach, as the hotel is just minutes from Newport Harbor and the Pacific Ocean's numerous water activities, as well as golf at the Pelican Hill Golf Club, hot-air ballooning and horseback riding. With its beautiful vistas over the nearby water, the hotel can even add romantic ambience to the list of qualities that make it such an attractive escape.
