JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina - Hotel Review

The Spirit of Aloha

by Alain Gayot

JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina in Hawaii
The JW Marriott Ihilani spa is housed in a separate structure and offers a myriad of pampering treatments including Vichy showers and Thalasso therapy baths.

Several years ago, a master development plan was created for Oahu's West Side, far from the energy of Waikiki and the busy downtown district of Honolulu. Today, the JW Marriott Ihilani stands tall as the Grande Dame of this modern, tourism-oriented development. Yet the beauty of this 640-acre resort is that you can hide out in seclusion and still be within easy access of the famous Ala Moana shopping center and some of the area’s hottest restaurants, including Nobu Waikiki and Roy’s.

If rest, relaxation and pampering are high on your agenda, then the JW Marriott Ihilani is the perfect getaway. Set on a protected man-made lagoon, swimming is not only relaxing here, but also totally safe. Laze away in the pool or simply sit alongside the circular pool with its inlaid orchid mosaic, with a Mai Tai in your hand.

Synonymous with luxury, the seventeen-story resort boasts 387 spacious guest rooms with some of the largest bathrooms we've seen. This oasis of tranquility comes complete with lush tropical surroundings, private lanais and breathtaking views.

You'll also be extremely well fed at the Ihilani, with several restaurants to choose from, including the hotel's signature gourmet Azul restaurant, offering a combination of local and international cuisine made with the freshest island ingredients. Don't miss the authentic Japanese Ushio-Tei restaurant, especially the "tabehodai" (buffet) on Fridays. Most of your meals, though can be had at the picturesque Naupaka Terrace restaurant with indoor/outdoor dining overlooking the pool.

Your kids will be well-taken care of, too, with a top-of-the-line children's program offering year-round outdoor adventures and indoor learning activities for toddlers and teens alike.

Be sure to take advantage of the excellent golf and tennis facilities. After a hard day's work on the links or the courts, make your way to the resort's signature spa, housed in a separate self-contained structure. There, you can indulge in a myriad of treatments, including Vichy showers and Thalasso therapy baths that will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and imbibing the spirit of Aloha.
