Revel Hotel Review

The tower so lean and elegant it virtually shoots to the stars; the odd, illuminated globe that defines the building, competing with a pale moon over restless seas... Revel, Atlantic City's newest resort and casino, is changing more than just the skyline in the nation's second largest gambling market.

The $2.4 billion Revel isn't like the other casinos in town, nor does it want to be. For one, it's completely smoke-free — a daring policy considering how hard the other casinos fought against a state law prohibiting smoking in the gaming halls. Here, the air smells sweet — fresh-ocean-air sweet.

Just breathing confirms the central place the Atlantic holds in the design plan. It echoes the sea with expansive views, curved surfaces, gardens, pools, lounges and spa. The complex sits on twenty acres of beachfront property and is 47 stories high. The 1,898 guest rooms and suites have spectacular ocean vistas.

Revel boasts fourteen restaurants, several designed and owned by celebrity chefs such as Jose Garces, who has three: Amada, an Andalusian tapas bar; Village Whiskey, which features spirits and cocktails accompanied by American dishes; and Distrito Cantina, a festive margarita bar that serves modern Mexican street food. Marc Forgione is at America Cut, a high-end steakhouse; and Robert Wiedmaier oversees Mussel Bar (a gastro pub designed as a rowdy Belgian roadhouse). Alain Allegretti is at Azure (a modern seafood restaurant with a menu expressing the French Riviera, Capri and St. Tropez rolled into one). Chef Michel Richard is behind Central Michel Richard (a modern bistro), O Bistro and Wine Bar (wine and small plates) and O Bistro Dining Room (featuring an à la carte menu).

The gaming hall doesn't look like the other casinos either, but then how could it since it the creation of Montreal's Scéno Plus — designers for theater, including Cirque du Soleil. Their concept: divide the casino into four distinctive "neighborhoods," each with a different look — all the better for visitors to quickly know where they are or where they need to go. Not only are the design elements artistic, there are windows at the ocean front wall, which let in bright sunlight — something other casinos eschew.

The hotel lobby, 114 feet above sea level, offers nearly two acres of space anchored by a SkyGarden just outside its doors. This verdant walkway leads to seating areas or the InOut Pool, where bathers can plunge outdoors or swim through a waterfall to the indoors, but always stay in water carefully kept at 85 degrees. There are ten pools in the building, including one in Bask, Revel's spa, which is a quiet, soothing and beautifully designed sanctuary. Bask features 32 therapy rooms, traditional spa treatments and well-being experiences such as sunrise yoga and beach boot camp.

The O2 area features six living rooms (intimate places for meeting friends or associates), several bars, a pool bar and a bistro. The SkyGarden is a blue tile sculpture that mimics a beautiful stream running to the sea.

The elevators that lead to guest rooms are accessible only to guests, and have their own lobbies and libraries. Throughout the building you find art to rival a museum.

Revel's Ovation Hall, a 5,500-seat the performance space, boasting a state-of-the-art sound system and unobstructed views of the stage, has already featured such headlines as Beyonce and Maroon 5. Revel also houses two night clubs — HQ Nightclub and HQ Beach Club, and a shopping area called TheRow, featuring high-end retail stores.
