French Elan Near the Runways

Art
Deco over the Blue Lagoon |
Since
opening its first property in 1964 in Strasbourg, France,
Sofitel has been a distinctly French hotel group. Today,
it brings its Gallic sensibility to nearly 200 destinations
around the globe, including sunny southern Florida, where
the Sofitel
Miami fits right in with its Cote d'Azur blend of
Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. Although it's situated
a few miles from the airport in the Blue Lagoon business
district, rather than along Henry Hohauser's sexy South
Beach, this hotel could easily have served as a backdrop for one of
Erté's celebrated Harper's Bazaar covers.
Throughout
the year, the property stays busy with executives, travelers
on flight layovers and cruise ship passengers bunking
pre- and post-voyage. Despite this utilitarian guest list,
you will find a surprising degree of style. Tastefully
done in shades of taupe and cocoa, the 254 guestrooms
and 27 suites provide a soothing alternative to Miami's
typical flamboyant accommodations. Voicemail, pay per
view, and phones in the bathrooms come standard, and Wi-Fi
is available in guestrooms and public areas. Nightly turndown
is an added treat.

Utility

South
Beach flavor near the airport |
As
with all Sofitels, cuisine plays an important role. A
notable menu is offered at La Riviera, a light-filled
brasserie that gazes over tropical gardens. There is also
a bakery and coffee shop serving Starbucks and creations
from the hotel's pastry chef. Le Bar in the lower lobby
overlooks the manmade Blue Lagoon and is often crowded
with the suit and tie brigades.
To
serve its many types of guests, Sofitel Miami offers a
variety of amenities, from business and conference rooms
to a fitness center, tennis courts and an outdoor swimming
pool. Two kids per room can stay free with parents, pets
are allowed and the regularly scheduled airport shuttle
is complimentary.
