Organic Luxury on the Island of Oahu
Editor's Note: On August 28, 2011, owners of The Waikiki EDITION installed new management and renamed the hotel The Modern Honolulu; it is no longer managed by Marriott.
Stepping into The Waikiki EDITION, visitors wouldn't guess that hotel chain Marriott International is one of the forces behind such a luxuriously hip destination — that is, until they find out that the company had a little help from one of the originators of the boutique hotel genre. Ian Schrager, the mastermind behind the Mondrian in Los Angeles and Gramercy Park Hotel in New York, to name just a few, joined Marriott to create a unique lodging experience, grounded in personal, intimate and individualized service, and utilizing Marriott's global reach, operational expertise and scale. The result: the EDITION hotel brand.
Conveniently located between Honolulu's business district and effervescent Waikiki beach, this hip hotel is within walking distance of the city's celebrated surfer beach, marina and world-class shopping at the Ala Moana Center. It became an overnight sensation as the Honolulu hot spot, with its stylish accommodations, vibrant nightclub, contemporary restaurant by famed chef Morimoto and multiple bars and pools.
The Waikiki EDITION exudes style from the lobby to the guest rooms and suites. The wall behind the reception desk displays an artsy patchwork collage by Herbie Fletcher made of broken surfboards used by pro surfers. The common color palette throughout the hotel comprises clean whites against neutral earth tones to echo the surrounding natural beauty and serenity of Waikiki.
The 353 guest rooms and suites are also outfitted to convey the same organic luxury theme with natural tones and rich woods. The large windows overlook the city, ocean, pools and Yacht Harbor. Many rooms have furnished terraces so guests can immerse themselves in dramatic vistas and Hawaii's perfect tropical climate. All come with 46-inch LCD televisions, complimentary high-speed Internet access and iPads (pending availability), Terrazzo countertops and sinks, large glass-enclosed showers, daybeds and 24-hour in-room dining service.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are offered at the on-site restaurant. The contemporary Japanese menu reflects Morimoto's style of integrating Western and Japanese ingredients to create a fresh take on traditional dishes. More of a cocktail connoisseur? The Waikiki EDITION has four thirst-quenching bars — the Lobby Bar, the Sunrise Pool bar, the private Sunset Beach bar and a nightclub — Crazybox — where the vibrant atmosphere attracts locals, not just hotel guests. There's even a VIP section, elevated above the dance floor, with its own private entrance.
For recreation, guests can work up an appetite at one of the hotel's two pools — the Sunrise Pool or the Private Sunset Beach Pool — the fitness center or Surf and Bikini Boot Camp. Relaxation is offered in the form of movies at the outdoor theater, therapeutic shopping at the on-site retail store or treatments at the full-service spa. The four treatment rooms of The Waikiki EDITION Hotel Spa provide the same relaxing ambience as the rest of the hotel, with their soothing color palette, stone sinks and natural materials. The spa also offers a selection of in-room services, including massage.
With its range of high-level business services and spaces — from a state-of-the-art executive boardroom and 9,200-square-foot ballroom to cutting-edge technology and a full-service business center — the hotel shows that it isn't just another pretty face. While some hotels cater to exclusively business or leisure travelers, The Waikiki EDITION is able to walk the line between both, with amenities and facilities for everyone from vacationing families to business execs.
