How many travelers have selected a beachfront hotel blindly, only to be disappointed upon arrival? Perhaps the beach was tiny, dirty, crowded or more hospitable to biting bugs than tanning tourists. Located a few barefoot steps away from Zihuatanejo, Mexico’s longest beach, The Tides Zihuatanejo — formerly Villa Del Sol — is not only conveniently situated, but offers numerous amenities for travelers in search of a true beach vacation.

While many of the hotels along Playa La Ropa are perched on a cliff, requiring a steep climb at the end of a beach day, The Tides literally ends on the sand. Lazy tourists lie on chaise lounges under palapas and palm trees on the hotel’s private beach, reading, tanning and enjoying the view, without having to leave the grounds. By simply raising a flag without even sitting up, they notify the speedy staff that they desire a drink or a meal, which is set up on a nearby table so as not to interrupt the laid-back beach experience.

More active visitors will enjoy the romantic hotel’s three pools, small gym, tennis courts and spa, while Playa La Ropa, the semi-circular mile-long stretch of sand the hotel calls home, offers many water sport options including parasailing, fishing, snorkeling, waterskiing, sailing and kayaking, and swimming in calm Zihuatanejo Bay. The hotel also has an activities desk inside its open-air palapa lobby, where visitors are greeted with a much-appreciated wet towel to beat the heat.

The 70 rooms (half of them suites) are spread out among tropical gardens and a meandering stream in adobe-style villas, each complete with hammock on a balcony or terrace. Although more beach casual than luxurious, the rooms offer air conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite television, in-room safe, mini-bar and a king-sized bed frequently decorated with flower petals by the conscientious housekeepers. Many of the rooms feature beach views, while the higher-end suites have their own small pools.

All the rooms include a simple breakfast of coffee and croissants, but the hotel’s fine restaurants and bars offer a variety of Mexican, American and other dishes. A leisurely stroll down the beach in either direction leads to many choices for a sunset margarita or midday meal.

For a break from Mexican food, try this fourteen-year-old waterfront Northern Italian restaurant at the Ixtapa Marina with a view of luxury yachts. Under a canopy, enjoy the sea breeze and caprese salad, fresh pasta, grilled shrimp, or a spicy lobster on taglioni with pink pepper sauce, washed down with an offering from the four-page wine list or a Bellini.
