View-tiful: The "Heavenly" Westin Maui

It all starts with the open-air lobby. Look past the choices of refreshing welcome beverages and leis towards the huge pond where koi, flamingos, ducks and swans frolic amongst lush green foliage, and a giant waterfall generates soothing, tropical white noise. The indoor-outdoor body of water, lined with art, walkways and exotic birds, leads to an extensive landscape of five elaborate interlocking swimming pools totaling 87,000 square feet with more waterfalls and slides ranging from mild to wild.

The entrance to the The Westin Maui Resort & Spa is so eye-catching that it takes some time before visitors even think of looking past the waterworks to gaze at adjacent Ka'anapali Beach, one of the most popular in the world. Even when guests ascend one of the two towers and take in the view from their balconies, it is still difficult to ignore the manmade part of the hotel juxtaposed against nature's finest and distant views of Molokai and Lanai.

The Maui Westin's pool and central location make it stand out from many of the other beach hotels that comprise the area known as Ka'anapali Beach Resort. Boats can come right up to the thin, sandy beach to pick guests up for a variety of activities, including snorkeling and parasailing. Virtually next door is a mall that offers shopping and many dining choices, including a food court that sells pizza.

There are also plenty of goodies and tropical drinks to order while sitting poolside at the hotel, or at one of its many restaurants. Sample Maui's fresh local ingredients at the chic upscale Tropica Restaurant & Bar. The resort's Wailele Polynesian Luau commands a spectacular oceanfront setting and features family-style dinner, served course by course, with a superb Polynesian revue including Maui's only extreme fire knife dance finale.

The 15,000-square-foot, second-floor Heavenly Spa by Westin also offers fantastic ocean views from both the waiting room and the locker rooms, which have frosted glass so the views are not two-way. From rejuvenating massages such as the traditional Lomi Lomi to revitalizing body wraps and water therapies, weary travelers are in for a complete renewal treat. The extensive spa menu includes treatments for couples, men and teens as well as bridal hair-style and make-up arrangements. Poolside cabana massages with an oceanfront setting are very popular with couples.

Adjacent to the spa is a 24-hour WestinWORKOUT fitness center, which offers state-of-the-art equipment with television screens. A variety of fitness classes such pilates, yoga, spinning, aquacise, body toning and one-on-one personal training is also available (charges apply). And if you fancy a relaxing sunrise or sunset walk, take advantage of the 1.1 mile Ka'anapali Beachwalk along the resort.

The 731 rooms and 28 suites, with the two-bedroom Renewal Suite most recently renovated in 2011, are of good size. They offer many amenities, from flat-screen televisions to ironing boards and mini refrigerator. All rooms feature in-room safe, high speed Internet access, a bathtub with two shower heads, and the Westin's renowned "Heavenly Bed."  If you can't get a room with a pool and ocean view, the alternative, looking out over the golf course and the West Maui Mountains, isn't too shabby, either.
