Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is taking advantage of a prime piece of real estate on Oahu's Waianae Coast with the opening of Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa at Ko Olina Resort & Marina. The beachfront resort will feature 460 Disney Vacation Club Villas, 343 hotel rooms and sixteen suites with wood, thatch, lava rock and coral accents, as well as such unique details as posts and beams made from salvaged outrigger canoes. Disney is uniting a traditonal Polynesian feel with a modern twist on this 21-acre property, which includes a white-sand beach, tropical gardens, turquoise lagoon and waterfalls. In addition to four restaurants and two lounges — including 'Ama'Ama for contemporary Island-inspired cooking, Makahiki's buffet in an open-air dining area and The 'Olelo Room for continental breakfast — the resort offers ten recreation facilities for children and adults alike, including multiple pools, an adventure trail, snorkeling lagoon and storytelling fire pit. There are four whirlpool spas, as well as an 18,000-square-foot spa with fifteen treatment rooms and a fitness center. For events, there are a 14,545-square-foot conference center and 36,695 square feet of outdoor venues. The resort will open in phases with the first scheduled for August 29, 2011.
