Habitat for Humanity to Build Ecotourism Village in Indonesia

Ribbon-cutting and house dedication by Habitat for Humanity Indonesia and PT Anek Tambang Tbk

In partnership with Asia Pulp & Paper, Habitat for Humanity Indonesia will build the organization’s first ecotourism village in Soran, on the island of Java near the Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating to approximately 850 AD. The addition of more than 420 homes and guest accommodations is intended to establish a sustainable, eco-friendly hospitality business based on the community’s historic music and craft traditions. “This is the first Habitat project in the world that creates shelter and economic opportunity for an entire community,” said James Tumbuan, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Indonesia. To accommodate eco-tourists, local homes will include guest quarters where visitors can sleep, laundry facilities to wash guests’ clothes and bedding and expanded kitchen facilities where guest meals can be prepared. The homes will be earthquake-proof, and a percentage of the project’s funds will be set aside for ongoing disaster relief. In addition, 250 villagers will be trained in laundry management, traditional food preparation for tourists, cultural performance and marketing traditional arts. As with all of its programs, Habitat Indonesia will engage community leaders, local stakeholders and the Soran villagers in all stages of the development, from planning through construction.
