A bottle of Bonny Doon Vineyard 2008 Bien Nacido X-Block Syrah, our wine of the week

Bonny Doon Vineyard
2008 Bien Nacido X-Block Syrah

Santa Maria Valley, CA

Founded in 1983 by notoriously rebellious vintner Randall Graham, Bonny Doon focuses on lesser-known varietals, particularly those from France's Rhone Valley. It should come as no surprise to anyone who has feasted their eyes on one of the winery's labels that Bonny Doon is located in the town of Santa Cruz, deep in the heart of New Age thinking. As part of its off-beat approach, the winery is wholly committed to biodynamic practices and is adamant about the use of screwcaps. The winery — probably best known for its widely distributed Le Cigare Volant — produces an interesting variety of approachable and affordable wines as well as a small number of small batch, handcrafted wines including the Bien Nacido Syrah. Produced from grapes grown in one of Central California's most respected vineyards, the 2008 Bien Nacido is rich, dark and demanding of attention. An earthy element asserts its presence on the nose and carries through to the finish. Other aromas and flavors include floral, citrus, smoke, tobacco, black currant, cranberry, licorice and game meats. The overall effect is a roller coaster for the senses. A wine so complex it easily stands on its own, it would pair best with simple foods like thick, grilled steaks, lamb tacos or a hearty winter vegetable stew.
