Our Selection for Wine of the Week February 13, 2012
Lasseter Family Winery 2008 Amoureux Sonoma Valley, CA
In 1992, John and Nancy Lasseter started their relationship with California's wine
industry as members of an amateur winemaking group. Ten years later, they purchased
their very own winery and began the Lasseter Family label. Today, three generations
of Lasseters work for the wine company to produce a variety of wines including a rosé
blend, a Rhone-inspired red blend, a Bordeaux-inspired red blend and Amoureux, a
Malbec-based blend. An alluring choice for a candlelit dinner, Amoureux is a nod to
John and Nancy's love affair with Malbec (thus the romantic name). The 2008 is blended
from a base of Malbec with 26 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 5 per cent Merlot and 3 per cent Cabernet
Franc. On the nose it offers ripe aromas of blueberries, blackberries and currants with
just a whiff of baking spice. Tightly structured, its flavors are a balance between feminine
berry and floral notes and more masculine notes of clove, nutmeg and forest floor. Full-bodied and plush, it lingers long with enticing vanilla and oak. Try it with venison loin or
filet mignon. It would also work well with a rack of lamb in blueberry sauce. Vegetarians
should try the wine with a rich stew or wild mushroom risotto.
