It’s the one official day of the year dedicated to pampering moms everywhere — and the pressure is on. However, choosing a wine for Mother’s Day doesn’t have to mean buying the bottle with the heftiest price tag (though we do encourage spoiling her!). Buying wine for mom can be as simple as putting yourself in her shoes and picking accordingly.

BUBBLES

1. Champagne Billecart-Salmon, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru

Origin: Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, France
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay (from Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Mesnil-sur-Oger)

This wine was made with Chardonnay coming from the Côte des Blancs villages of Avize, Chouilly, Cramant and Mesnil-sur-Oger. The blend of two vintages was vinified in stainless steel and remained four to five years on the yeast before disgorgement.

The wine shows a light straw color with a delicate, abundant effervescence. It reveals a bouquet of spring flowers, lemon, wet stones and stone fruit. The palate is creamy with a chalky texture, a fruity full-bodied richness combined with racy acids and a seamless finish.

2. G.H. Mumm Grand Cordon Rosé

Origin: Reims, France
Varietal: 60% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Meunier

Maison Mumm was established in 1827 in Reims. It owns 218 hectares of vineyards in some of the finest terroirs in Champagne. Mumm Champagne House creates it unique style with the use of the fruity richness of Pinot Noir. In 1870, Maison Mumm built its own research laboratory to further its understanding of bottle fermentation. The initials in the brand’s name are of Georges Hermann Mumm, a descendant of the original founders. The eagle logo is the blazon of the family, born of a long line of barons and knights, who were for Cologne, Germany.

This rosé Champagne has a salmon-pink color with glints of orange, with fine bubbles. It has a fruity character with rich aromas of wild red and black berries, typical of the Pinot Noir cultivated in Maison Mumm’s vineyards. On the palate, it delivers flavors of fragrant summer fruits and a long, bright finish, balanced by the succulent sweetness of red berries.

You will note that the bottle does not have a label — a first for Champagne. .The House’s iconic red ribbon is engraved directly into the glass making it a bottle to keep.

3. Zardetto, Prosecco Rosé, Extra Dry 2020

De Négoce is a wine company founded by Cameron Hughes that specializes in sourcing high-quality wine grapes from top vineyards around the world and producing small-lot wines that are sold directly to consumers at a reasonable price.

The company’s business model is based on the concept of “négociant,” which is a French term used to describe a wine merchant who buys grapes or finished wine from different vineyards and wineries and blends them to create a final product. De Négoce sources its grapes from prestigious vineyards in California, Oregon, Washington, France and other wine regions, and then vinifies them at a custom crush facility in California. The resulting wines are sold exclusively through the company’s website to members of its mailing list.

This Shiraz shows a dark crimson color. The nose delivers lots of ripe, red berries, spices, leather and cacao. The palate shares an abundance of ripe cherries, spice and fine but present tannins, all wrapped in lush acidity in order to deliver a long, refined finish.

Hahn Family Wines’ founders Nicky and Gaby Hahn first came to the Santa Lucia Highlands in the late ’70s, and the Swiss-born couple quickly recognized the region’s potential to produce exceptional wines. The winery owns and farms 650 acres of estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The family also owns an additional 750 acres of prime vineyards in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco AVA.

The Hahns released their first wine from SLH in 1980 and today, now run by second-generation vintner Philip Hahn, they own about 10% of the total acreage planted in the appellation. Hahn’s estate vineyards offer a diverse selection of terroir for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other cool climate grape varieties.

This Hahn Pinot Noir offers a generous crimson red color, aromas of bright cherry, strawberry and a touch of spice. The palate is balanced, packing lush berry flavors, juicy acidity, some spice and a well-measured dosage of tannins.

9. Green and Red, Zinfandel 2016, Tip Top Vineyard

Green & Red Vineyards, named for its red iron soils veined with green serpentine, is located in the steep hills on the east side of Napa Valley. The planting was started in 1972 on ground originally in vineyards in the 1890’s. The vineyards are a small percentage of the 200-acre property, which ranges in elevation from 900 to 2,000 feet.

The Tip Top zinfandel comes from their uppermost mountain vineyard grown at 2000 feet above the Pacific. The vineyard is terraced and faces northeast. The soils are rust red and rocky loam.

The wine shows a deep crimson color and delivers aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. The palate reveals red ripe fruit, spices and licorice, elegant tannins and a lingering, layered finish.

Ink Grade Estate is a winery located in the Napa Valley region of California. The winery produces a range of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and a red blend (Zinfandel dominant) called “Andosol.”

The unique story of Ink Grade Vineyard begins in 1873, when Ulysses S. Grant signed over a land deed for this site. Vines were planted for the first time by visionary pioneers who believed in the incredible potential of the land. Theron Ink was one of them. In 1875, Theron began building Ink Grade Road to connect his land holdings from Pope Valley to the Napa Valley, enabling him and other nearby families to ship wine down to St Helena.

This wine shows off a beautiful pale golden color, aromas of lemon zest, pear and some tropical notes. The palate starts with fresh peeled green apple, some tropical elements again and finishes with a touch of minerality. This wine has a lot to offer and delivers an amazing finish.

Alain de la Treille was born in 1925 in Saint-Georges-sur-Cher, located in the heart of the Touraine vineyards. A farmer and wine enthusiast, he spent his life promoting the Touraine area and Loire Valley wines. During his career, he met Jean-Claude Bougrier, a winemaker also from Saint-Georges-sur-Cher. They became good friends who could spend hours talking about Loire Valley style, terroir and how to improve the vinification process. When Alain passed away in 1985, Jean-Claude decided to create a wine brand to pay tribute to his good friend, and Alain de la Treille wines were born.

It is a pale, yellow Sauvignon Blanc with a nose unfolding grapefruit, lemon and crushed stone aromas. The taste is crisp with flavors of white stone fruit, flowers and grapefruit.
