Top 10 Prestige "Tete de Cuvee" Champagnes 2009

Krug 1996 Clos du Mesnil

Champagne Krug
Clos du Mesnil
1996 Brut Blanc de Blancs

Many wines and Champagnes require expert mixing and blending, utilizing different varietals of grapes from different vineyards, and production from different years, in order to prepare the best final products. But for more than two decades, the house of Krug has produced the iconic Clos du Mesnil, sourcing Chardonnay grapes exclusively from the four acre parcel located in the middle of the village of Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger. (We visited there and enjoyed a picnic in the middle of the vineyard that is considered one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the world.) So not only is it a single varietal from a single year, but all from a single vineyard which dates back to the 17th century. That explains the high price tag, along with the fact that it is only released in Krug’s self-declared vintage years. Savor the distinctive honey flavor on the palate.

Price: $900

With a little more money to spend, try the 1996 Clos d'Ambonnay, $2,100.
