by Michelle Kwan The recent Cognac One Champagne and Wine Portfolio Tasting held at Corkbuzz Wine Studio showcased some of the best vintages from both internationally recognized and lesser known but equally noteworthy vineyards alike. Venerable houses like Bollinger-owned Champagne maker Ayala, the only French Champagne producer with Latin provenance and one of the founding members of the Syndicat des Grandes Marques de Champagne, presented a delightful Brut Majeur in which hints of citrus prevailed consisting of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier. They also presented a Rosé Majeur consisting of 51% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. Spanish vineyard Agricola Castellana, a producer of wine for over 70 years, featured a well balanced Verdejo with tropical flavors. The Xavier Flouret collection was a standout with a crisp Sancerre aged in steel tanks with grapefruit and lemon overtones and a well balanced Fynbos 2011 consisting of 80% Chenin Blanc and 12% Semillon which was full of peach and apricot. These make great selections for a light fish and soft cheese pairing. Among the Portfolio’s standouts was a full, rich and very deep 2005 Syrah from the foothills of the Cave de Tain, along the Hermitage, where about half the volume of Northern Côtes du Rhônes are produced. The 1999 vintage of the same varietal featured accents of tobacco and vanilla with a soft smooth finish.
