Man vs. nature. Man vs. man. Man vs. self. These outer and inner conflicts inhabit every moment in “The Revenant,” director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s cinematic tour de force. The title aptly refers to Leonardo DiCaprio’s character who quite literally comes back from near-death to seek revenge on the man (played by a remarkably villainous Tom Hardy) who abandoned him and killed his son.

Inspired by the true story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who was mauled by a grizzly bear near the Missouri River in 1823, “The Revenant” is as raw as it gets. Throughout the two-and-a-half hour odyssey is a cold and bleeding DiCaprio who screams, shivers, grunts, gasps and crawls his way through the ultra-violent, unforgiving wilderness of snow, raging rivers, wild animals and barbaric humans. In the midst of the gore and anguish, Glass is haunted by the memory of his dead Native-American wife and son who were murdered because of their heritage.

Iñárritu’s decision to film “The Revenant” exclusively with natural light adds to the movie’s visceral potency but there are some elements that remain a bit too unrealistic — the CGI bison stampede, an avalanche, certain aspects of the bear mauling. Still, the imagery, keen camera angles and larger-than-life landscapes force viewers to experience every exhausting, unrelenting moment and journey with the characters as they search for meaning through survival.
