“Straight Outta Compton” was released at the right time, as communities continue to struggle with issues of violence and segregation. It depicts the true story of five young African-Americans from Compton in the late 1980s, who get together, adding up their complementary skills, to rap about their daily lives: persecution, violence, drugs, etc. The rap group self dubbed N.W.A changed the rap game forever. This film impeccably illustrates the rise of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube (played by his own son) from penniless, marginal kids to notorious rap stars, despite the police community and backward racists trying to shut them down. On top of that, their manager was secretly ripping them off. Even if internal issues eventually tore N.W.A apart, the group led the way for many other “gangster rappers” and transformed the music industry. The movie depicts a reality that unfortunately persists in some neighborhoods: arbitrary police harassment and geographic segregation. Mainly, it recounts the brilliant and extravagant path of each of these famous rappers as they lived it, and how their differences transformed their original relationship. Even if the story is romanticized, it still portrays an accurate image of this contemporary and somewhat optimistic human adventure. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube were on the set to give personal insight and supervision. Of course, you also hear all the old-school tracks, from “Boyz-N-The Hood” to “F*ck tha Police,” as N.W.A works on them in the studio. No need to be a fan of N.W.A to enjoy this movie but if you are, you will discover facts you’ve never heard before!
