An Emerging New York City Summer Tradition by Michelle Kwan While heavy rainclouds threatened to dampen the debut of La Nuit en Rosé onboard the Hornblower Hybrid Yacht, calmer winds eventually prevailed. Undeterred by the threat of rain, New York’s many wine connoisseurs flocked to the early summer fête to sample some eighty different rosés, mingle with winemakers and generally enjoy the staggering views of the Hudson River. Both levels of the sleek yacht poured samples of the crisp summer wine, with most purveyors hailing directly from Provence, France, the southeastern spiritual home of the iconic drink. Guests received a comprehensive introduction to the region’s award-winning rosés by sampling from a collection of vineyards, each of which poured sharp, floral wines that offered hints of summer fruits like strawberries, apricots, peaches and raspberries. Maison Saint AIX at La Nuit en Rosé Most were blends created from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Counoise varietals, including a spectacular Maison Saint AIX Rosé 2013. Elsewhere, a Le Caprice de Clementine from Château Les Valentines further demonstrated the quintessential floral accents and summer fruit characteristics that have made this region’s rosés internationally known. Of course, no celebration would be complete without a few bottles of sparkling wine, and most winemakers made sure to bring along a few special bottles to share with the crowd on board. Among the sparklers, an exceptional Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé NV and Rosé Demi-Sec NV – made with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay – were highlights. Rosé was the perfect accompaniment for a Hudson River cruise A few Italian rosé makers were brought along for the party as well, tipping bottles of sparkling wine like a Berlucchi Franciacorta Rose NV from Berlucchi Vineyards, which yielded flavors of both ripe and dried peaches as well as apricots, all with a toasty finish. As the sun set along the Hudson River and the party ramped up inside, it was easy to see why rosé is such a popular summer wine.
