2010 Ford Taurus SHO Review

Fast Full-Size Sedan

In short: Twin-turbo power for this American sport sedan.

The turbocharged Taurus SHO (short for "Super High Output") boasts a 3.5-liter, 365-horsepower V6 that rockets this cruise-ship-sized sedan from 0-60 in just over 5 seconds—pretty impressive for a car that tips the scale at nearly two-and-a-half tons. This tank of a Taurus also handles remarkably well thanks to a responsive all-wheel drive system and Ford's SelectShift transmission, although we still found our tester to dance a bit too much.

Unfortunately, the Taurus SHO's size and power comes at a bit of a price—most noticeably at the gas pump. Earning a combined fuel economy of 15 mpg on our test drive, the SHO's fuel-thirsty engine never really lives up to its EcoBoost appellation. That's not to say we didn't appreciate the extra space that this extra large sedan has to offer. The interior is roomy and comfortable in spite of its plastic accoutrements, while the trunk is large enough to fit a set of golf clubs—or two or three. The SHO's height—nearly half a foot taller than many similar sedans—also makes for a pleasant view from the driver's seat, although rear visibility is still somewhat of a problem when parking. However, dimensional drawbacks aside, we appreciate the Taurus SHO's daring embrace of size and power in an era when most car companies are playing it safe with gutless subcompacts and characterless coupes.
