THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED 51 Tavern Restaurant Review

: Former Patina chef Sevan Abdessian transformed his Recess Eatery on York Boulevard into a more casual, loungy neighborhood gastropub for Highland Park locals. An approachable menu of small plates, microbrews and craft cocktails is found in the airy venue that features plenty of exposed brick and old wood. There’s a sidewalk patio and pretty walled garden setting in back --- the fireplace table is especially pleasant at night. The local scene at the bar is lively, and the garden-fresh cocktails are excellent. Beer-battered Alaskan cod, garlic fries and a savory fried cauliflower sack are perfect for grazing; Sev’s Sliders --- ground sirloin, applewood smoked bacon and confit tomato --- are juicy and flavorful, while the shawarma tacos topped with pickled turnips and harissa tahini are hard to resist. Vegetarians will discover dishes like edamame fatoush or red wine roasted beets with greens and pistachios. End a meal with the chef’s smooth labneh cheesecake. A short, serviceable wine list has mostly California selections, along with a few Italian and French choices.
