With a big 521 as an art centerpiece on the long wall, 521 Kitchen & Que presents a simple but colorful interior. Former chef de cuisine at Kevin Rathbun Steak and Rathbun's, Drew Kirkland is among the classically trained Atlanta chefs who specialize in barbecue. Everything including sides, salad dressings and lemonade is made in-house, and the bread comes from H & F. Meats don't arrive at the table already sauced, a big plus, so patrons can decide how much to apply --- or not, if the meat's perfect as is. We like the spicy selection, one of two sauces on the table. The baked sweet potato is a fine accompaniment to the tender, meaty St. Louis cut ribs. The lovely smoked locally raised chicken is a half bird per order. Sides are seasonal, so they change frequently. Go for the crisp, lightly dressed coleslaw; the black-eyed peas with crumbled bacon let the flavor of the peas shine through. Brunswick stew, when offered, is only at brunch. Desserts vary daily; try the pecan pie if possible, and we predict you eat the entire slice yourself. A limited beer and wine list is available.
