Aegean Café is one of OC’s most authentic and lively restaurants for serious Greek food. Perched high on a downtown Laguna Beach hill in a quiet little strip mall, the eatery can actually be quite boisterous at times, with exuberant dancing servers, live music and belly dancing on the weekends. Don’t be surprised if you hear someone call out “opah!” and then offer you a shot of ouzo while Greek musicians such as Alex Galas and Yiorgos Vassilandonakis perform. Some starters are a must, so try the classic tzatziki, spanakopita, stuffed grape leaves, hummus or feta cheese and olives. You can’t go wrong with the charbroiled meat or seafood brochettes, which come with steaming rice and refreshing lemon. The roast lamb specialties are all good, but you should give some thought to the grilled and fresh seafood dishes since the ocean is so near. Some customers rent out the entire restaurant for weddings, anniversaries and special occasions, so it’s best to call ahead for reservations. The owners also run a fast casual restaurant called Greek Town Grill on 17th Street in Newport-Mesa.
