Akbar Palace Restaurant Review:
The departure of Bombay Palace left a void in Midtown West that has been filled by this authentic "haute" Indian restaurant. The proprietor is a self-made restaurateur who began with spots on Curry Row that he still owns. This venture is spacious, fitted with contemporary furnishings and decorative accents and has a full bar. Appetizers showcase regional Indian standards like aloo and chicken samosas alongside less ubiquitous choices such as a light and crispy breaded butterfly shrimp as well as pepper-crusted scallops. Entrées include an array of vegetable, seafood and meat selections. An Indo Chinese-inspired chilli chicken is full of spicy and harmonious flavors while a flaky and sinewy crab bhuna is replete with sweet and savory aromas. A wine list will feature whites, reds and rosés from the Old and New Worlds. Among desserts are Indian ice cream, a well-known favorite, and rarely featured carrot pudding.
